Sad News

I normally don't post anything personal here but my beloved Grandpop who inspired my love of food and cooking and who introduced me to many local Baltimore foods died yesterday. We were very close and this is a difficult time for me and my family.

In his memory, I'd like to share a round up of some of his favorite foods:
Fried Oysters
Catfish
Sour Beef & Dumplings
Shrimp Salad
Homefries
Smearcase
Apple Pie
Deli-Style Macaroni Salad
Ground Beef Gravy

Note: Because I have been planning for the holidays, I already have two weeks of Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving leftovers posts scheduled so check back here frequently for updates. However, I might be slightly harder to reach than normal so please be patient when it comes to questions or responding to comments.

I am sooo sorry for you. But it sounds like he left a beautiful, soulful legacy...and like Nicole above mentioned...at the most perfect time of the year.

Strength and peace in the upcoming days and weeks.

My grandmother, who was also a big cooking inspiration for me, also passed away recently, so I sympathize with what you're going through. For me, cooking is a way to feel close to my grandmother-- I always get out her recipes when I miss her the most.
I love your blog-- you'll be in my thoughts.

I follow you on Twitter and saw your post about it. I was so sorry to hear the news.

My grandmother died last Wednesday and I traveled home from abroad to be with my family. Each of our experiences is different, but I am familiar with the great sadness it can bring. It sounds like you were very close and this will be a very difficult time.

You and your family are in my prayers. May you be blessed with strength, comfort and warm memories. God Bless.

Rachel - there's never going to be a great time for something like this, but a time of celebration and thanksgiving seems very appropriate for celebrating your grandfather's life and giving thanks for everything he contributed to you and your family. All the best.

I know that I am responding late to this. Guess I have been busy with the holiday preparations myself and am just getting to the backlog of my favorite feeds.

I am so sorry for your loss. He must have been quite a guy to have inspired you and by extension this wonderful site full of good ideas. Not to mention, his great taste shows in that list of foods.
