Blood Orange Margaritas

Ingredients:
1 cup tequila
2/3 cup blood orange juice
1/3 cup triple sec

Directions:
In a pitcher, stir all ingredients together. Pour over ice in margarita glasses. Serves four.

My thoughts:
I was emailing back and forth with a Coconut & Lime reader the other day and she mentioned having had a really good blood orange margarita at a local restaurant in New Mexico. She wanted to make her own but couldn't find blood orange juice. Well, I can't help her with the juice, but I can provide an excellent recipe. We happened to have a sack of blood oranges on hand so my husband did a little experiment and came up with this. They are ridiculously good. A few notes: We used Sauza Gold, which is a mid-range tequila. Don't use the super cheap stuff, but it doesn't make sense to use the $40+ sipping tequila either. I have heard of blood orange juice being available bottled, but I have never seen it, so you will probably have to juice your own. It took about 5 blood oranges to get enough juice. To get the most juice out of your blood oranges (or any citrus for that matter) juice it at room temperature, and use a juicer. I don't always use my juicer but when you need a lot of juice or are using expensive citrus using a juicer is key, they really get every milliliter of juice out of the fruit. One caveat about blood orange juice-it will stain, so take care when you are juicing. One more tip, we just bought this glass pitcher with stirring rod and it was great for both mixing the drinks and holding any extra for easy refilling.

I guess I'll have to squeeze my own if I want to make them huh? Or come to your house?

There is no such thing as a bad margarita in my opinion, so the search for blood oranges is on!

Thanks for all the blood orange tips, personally I don't have problems finding blood oranges and actually prefer to squeeze my own (and have some leftover for eating!) but this has become quite a resource for those who aren't as fortunate!

Try www.localharvest.org. I've bought blood oranges from McManigle Grove on this great site which has products from local and organic farmers across the country.

My husband and I have been making margaritas for the past two days and this recipe looks soooo good. We have grand marnier, do you think that would be good instead of the triple sec? Tahnks for posting!

Katie Jean: I think it would work just fine, we probably would have used Grand Marnier or Cointreau, but we didn't have any on hand. They are a little less sweet than Triple Sec so you might want to add a dash of simple syrup.
