Chocolate Guinness Cake

Ingredients:

1 cup Guinness
10 tablespoons butter, sliced
3/4 cup cocoa
3/4 cup sour cream
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
2 eggs (at room temperature)
2 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 tablespoons vanilla

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter (or spray with cooking oil) a 9 inch pan throughly. In a large pot combine Guinness and butter and heat until until butter is melted. Whisk in cocoa and sugar. In a small bowl, combine sour cream, eggs and vanilla. Pour into pot, whisk to combine. In a small bowl, combine baking soda and flour. Add to pot, whisking to combine. Pour into prepared pan and bake about 45 minutes or until a toothpick (inserted into the middle of the pan) comes out clean.

*This cake is so moist, it really doesn't need icing.

A friend of mine made this cake for an International Dinner Party (an awesome idea, by the way) and it was DELICIOUS. She only used one stick of butter (omitting the extra 2 TBSP) and it was still rich and moist. This is a delicious cake!

This cake was excellent. However it seems that my oven cooks faster than most because the cake was done in 25 mins. So moist, so delicious! I love chocolate so I did make a chocolate ganache for it. Yummy!

This is a good recipe but nearly identical to one in Feast by Nigella Lawson with a little more butter and a little less vanilla, so it is not exactly original.

Anon: I am not quite sure what you are trying to say. I've never even seen that cookbook so I surely didn't copy it if that is what you are trying to imply. As I clearly state in the FAQ I can't claim to have INVENTED everything I post but the recipes are original. I don't follow other people's recipes when I bake and this one is very, very similar to the chocolate sour cream recipe (http://coconutlime.blogspot.com/2005/10/chocolate-sour-cream-cupcakes.html) I created and used as a base, but with Guinness and on a smaller scale. So if anything, I "copied" from my self.

What a wonderful idea for a cake! I never would have thought Chocolate and Guiness would pair well together, but I'm sure my boyfriend would love this cake for his birthday or other special occassion. He's a serious beer geek. Thanks for sharing!

can this be made into cupcakes (like a normal box cake mix), just adjusting the cooking time?

Elise, I don't know anything about box mixes but this and just about any cake can be made as cupcakes. I think it would probably need to bake about 10-15 minutes.

My bf loves this. I'm thinking of pairing it with the Bailey's frosting.

Okay, this might sound like a stupid question but I'm only 17 and not very experienced in the world of alcoholic drinks. I've tasted Guinness before and I know it's very strong but I've never tried any cakes that have alcohol in them. Do they taste like the drink you're using? Or does the baking make them sweeter? Because this looks really good but I don't want it to end up tasting like the beer.

Hey Suzanne-
While some cakes with alcohol in them taste pretty boozy, this one just is very moist and chocolatey. I am not a huge beer person and I liked it.
